    SCALES MOUND, Ill.-Mrs. John (Donna M.) Diedrich, 86, formerly of Scales Mound, Illinois, passed away at 9:25 a.m., Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Galena-Stauss Senior Care Community in Galena, Illinois.

    Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 29, 2014, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Apple River, Illinois, with the Rev. Chris Kuhn, the Rev. Max Striedl, the Rev. Max Lasrado, the Rev.. JoJi Reddy, the Rev. David Beauvais and Msgr. Everett Hiller officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Apple River.

    Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 28 and from 10:00-10:45 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph's Church, Apple River, where the parish rosary will be recited at 3:45 p.m.

    The Miller-Steinke Funeral Home of Scales Mound is in charge of arrangements.

    GALENA-After well over an hour in closed session, the Galena School Board Thursday evening unanimously accepted the resignation of Galena Primary School Principal Chad Steckel effective June 27.

    According to Superintendent Dr. Dale German, Steckel will spend his remaining time in the district working out of the district office at the high school.

    Greimann will provide the Gazette Friday morning with a copy of the agreement between the district and Steckel.

    The board took no action on the second matter listed for closed session discussion which was possible approval of a remedial warning for a certified employee.

    Steckel was not in attendance at the meeting and has been absent from the school for more than a week.

  • New superintendent for Galena

    Beginning July 1, Dr. Sharon Olds will take the reins as Galena School District superintendent.

    The Galena School Board offered Olds the position following four days of interviews last week. Consultants from the search firm of McPherson & Jacobson negotiated with Olds over the next several days before the appointment was made official at the board's Tuesday evening, April 23, special meeting.

    Olds is currently assistant superintendent for the 1,640-student North Boone School District and principal of Poplar Grove Elementary.

    GALENA-The Galena School Board narrowed the applicant pool to four finalists who will be interviewed by stakeholder groups and the board of education April 16-19.

    During a closed session discussion, which included the four newly-elected-but-not-yet-seated board members, on Wednesday evening, April 10, the board weighed in on the applicants and decided to schedule interviews with:

    • William Mulvaney, superintendent of the Armstrong-Ellis Consolidated School District and Armstrong Township High School in Armstrong;

    • Todd Williams, principal of Garfield Elementary School in the Moline School District in Moline;

    • Sharon Olds, assistant superintendent of the North Boone School District in Poplar Grove; and

    • Stanten Adcock, superintendent of the Brown County School District in Mt. Sterling.

    Former Galena Primary School secretary Nikki L. Hesselbacher, Galena, admitted in court earlier this month that she withheld $8,000 in funds raised for the school district during three separate student functions. She was charged with misapplication of funds, a class 3 felony.

    The Illinois Department of Agriculture will hold a public information meeting in East Dubuque to explain its plans this year to treat parts of northern Illinois for the destructive gypsy moth.

    The meeting will cover plans to spray 1,223 acres southeast of East Dubuque along U.S. 20.

    The meeting is Monday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at the East Dubuque City Hall, 185 Wisconsin Ave.

    EAST DUBUQUE-The Jo Daviess County Sheriff's office reported on Nov. 22 at approximately 3 a.m., the Dubuque Police Department advised the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's office that they were actively pursuing a vehicle westbound on US 20 across the Julien Dubuque Bridge.

    STOCKTON-On Oct. 29 at approximately 6:43 a.m., Jo Daviess County deputies were dispatched to a one-vehicle rollover accident with injuries on U.S. 20 East about one-fourth of a mile east of South Logemann Road, rural Stockton.

    Sergio Cordero, 42, of Galena, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, a class X felony.

    According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 15, Cordero sexually assaulted a Galena woman. During the assault, he injured her. He was taken into custody on Aug. 17. Bond was set at $25,000. If he pays 10 percent, he will be let out, and is to have no contact with the survivor of the alleged assault.

    Judge William Kelly found Thomas Ernst, 47, of Apple River, not guilty of counts of criminal sexual assault after a bench trial Wednesday, May 13.

    A grand jury heard evidence against Ernst on Sept. 5, 2008. In Illinois, a grand jury determines whether there is enough evidence for a trial. According to the bill of indictment, Ernst faced four counts of criminal sexual assault.

    A Stockton man broke into one of the village's banks Saturday night looking for cash. He left penniless.

    At 4 a.m. on May 16, Stockton Police responded to a silent interior alarm at Citizens State Bank in Stockton. Upon arrival police observed Willie Love, 43, of Stockton through a window. He was crawling on the floor inside the bank.

    A Galena woman is seeking restitution for damages to her vehicle in connection to the arson reported in the April 1 issue of the Gazette.

    According to Jo Daviess court records, Donna M. Williams, 67 of Hazel Green Wis., knowingly ignited and damaged a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier belonging to Lisa Miller of Galena. The Cavalier was located at 851 Young St., outside of Miller's apartment building.

    According to court records, Albert R. Thompson Jr., 23 of Milwaukee, Wis., knowingly provided false information to officer Wayne Moyer while in East Dubuque.

    A Wisconsin woman is being charged with stealing the gas card of a Galena businesswoman at the place they both worked.

    According to Jo Daviess County court records, Mary R. Reeves of Hazel Green Wis. knowingly exerted unauthorized control of a fuel card belonging to the owner of a local automotive dealership in Galena. The court records said that Reeves had control of the card at different times from Nov. 15, 2008 to March 15, 2009, a span of four months. The card was valued at more than $300, but less than $10,000 dollars.

    Car versus semi results in injuries

    ELIZABETH-On April 24 at approximately 9:34 a.m., the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's office received a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle accident with injuries located on U.S. 20 one-fourth mile east of South Evans Road east of Woodbine. Upon arriving on the scene, deputies discovered that a vehicle driven by Stanley Beyer, 66, Stockton, had been traveling westbound on U.S. 20 when Beyer's vehicle collided with an oncoming semi driven by Zdravko Dacic, 52, Rockford.

    EAST DUBUQUE-On March 10 at approximately 9 a.m., the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's office received a 911 report of a traffic accident with injuries on U.S. 20 approximately one-half mile east of Imbus Road, rural Galena.

    On March 12, Richard L. Corso of Apple River pleaded guilty to the offense of aggravated battery, a class 3 felony.

    According to authorities, Corso struck an individual over the head with a pool cue, causing great bodily harm. Corso was sentenced to two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by Circuit Judge William A. Kelly.

    A judge will hear convicted murderer David Damm's request for a retrial on Friday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. The request, originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 16, was rescheduled after extreme winter weather and a water main break closed Jo Daviess County Courthouse.

    On Oct. 15, 2008, a jury took less than an hour to decide Damm should be put to death for the murder of 13-year-old Donnisha Hill. The jury found Damm guilty of the murder Oct. 9, after a month-long trial.

    Armando Villa, 60, of rural Galena, was in court last week facing misdemeanor charges for a number of incidents from last year. Jo Daviess County State's Attorney Terry Kurt asked to change the trial date, which was set to begin in March. Two witnesses against Villa, said Kurt, were going to be out of the state on the trial date.

    Hanover woman injured in two vehicle crash

    ELIZABETH-On Dec. 31 at 5:24 p.m., Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a two vehicle accident with injuries one-eighth mile south of 5101 South Pleasant Road in rural Elizabeth. Upon arriving at the scene it was determined that a vehicle driven by Marlo Vernon Goodrich Jr., 27, Hanover, lost control while cresting a hill near 5101 South Pleasant Hill in rural Elizabeth. Goodrich's vehicle, which was southbound, struck a vehicle which was northbound, driven by Douglas Freeman, 59, Elizabeth. A passenger in the Freeman vehicle, Elizabeth J. Wurster, 55, Hanover, was transported to the Midwest Medical Center in Galena, for injuries sustained in the accident. Another passenger, Brandon J. Haggerty, 32, Hanover, was uninjured.

    Judge Kevin Ward ruled Thursday, Dec. 18, that the plaintiffs will not have to post bond in their case opposed to Tradition Dairy outside of Nora.

    Members of Helping Others Maintain Environmental Standards (HOMES) brought the suit against Tradition, citing environmental concerns. After a handful of days of testimony spread out over a number of months, Judge Ward in late October approved a preliminary injunction halting operations at the facility.

    Stacey Allen, 37, of Galena, was charged in Jo Daviess Circuit Court with theft, a class 3 felony. According to the criminal complaint, through May 2007 and July 2008, Allen "knowingly obtained, by deception or threat," money from another Galena resident.

    The criminal complaint does not list a specific amount, except to say Allen is charged with taking "in excess of $300."

You Lose." The intensified enforcement effort against impaired drivers underscores the severity of the problem both locally and across the nation.

    Joshua Murphy, 27, of Hanover, was charged in Jo Daviess Circuit Court with forgery, a class 3 felony, and theft, a class A misdemeanor. According to court documents, Murphy wrote a $75 check from another individual's account to Dually's.
