GALENA-Timothy Salgado, 12, Galena, who will be in seventh grade this fall at Mazzuchelli Middle School, Dubuque, Iowa, was recently selected, based on outstanding academic achievements and leadership potential, to participate in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.
Salgado was nominated for the honor by Paula White, a teacher at Holy Family Catholic Schools in Dubuque.
"The Junior National Leaders Conference will help me to enhance my leadership skills while I measure my abilities against the leaders of our country from history and today," said Salgado, who is currently seeking tuition sponsors. "I believe it will help me reach my full potential."Salgado is one of 250 middle school students from across the U.S. who will take part in the conference with the theme "Voices of Leadership: Reflecting on the Past to Create the Future."
The conference introduces young people to the tradition of leadership throughout American history while helping them develop their own leadership skills. During the six-day program, students take part in educational activities and presentations and explore relevant sites, such as Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, W.V., and Washington, D.C.'s museums and memorials.
Salgado's future career aspirations include astronomy, engineering and the National Football League.
