Gayle Monahan

GALENA–Gayle (Edmonds) Monahan, 96, Galena, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019, at Prairie Ridge, Galena.

Gayle was born on Sept. 21, 1922, in Galena, the daughter of Byron and Rebecca (Virtue) Edmonds.

She married Howard H. Monahan on July 16, 1942, in Galena.

She graduated from Galena High School in 1942 and worked at the Ben Franklin Store in Galena for over 15 years.

She volunteered at the Galena Stauss Nursing Home in Galena, doing hair.

She loved to travel west, spending many winters in Arizona.

Gayle was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She will be missed by all.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Celia (Lewis) Monahan, East Dubuque; four grandchildren: Kelly (Steve) Funke, Peoria; Mark (Julie) Monahan, East Dubuque; Jay (Pam) Monahan, Metamora, Ohio; Pat (Cheri) Monahan, Hiawatha, Iowa; and 12 great-grandchildren; Megan and Sarah Funke; Ryan, Tyler, Alec and Carlie Monahan; Taylor and Bailey Monahan; Erin and Kyle Monahan; and Allie and Hannah Cahill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; her son Terry; her parents; six brothers; and six sisters.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2019, with Rev. Patricia Allen-Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, rural Galena.

Gayle’s family would like to thank the staff at Unity Point Hospital, Prairie Ridge of Galena and Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care given to Gayle.
