Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa hosted the Vintage Triumph Register’s Roadsters Run the Ridges convention Aug. 29 to Sept. 1. The event drew 300 people with 200 cars for activities in The Galena Territory, Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa as well as a car show in Galena. Forrest and Ruth Shields, Park Ridge, bought this Triumph TR-3A Roadster in 1961 in Evanston. He drove it as he served in the Army and during his college years while courting his wife of 48 years. They drove the Triumph in all weather conditions, even in winter months when Forrest had to hand crank the car to start it. In 1971 a bolt on the radiator fan came loose and piercing the radiator. Although Forrest planned to repair the car, a growing family and the start of his contracting business delayed the project 43 years. Meanwhile the roadster sat in their garage until his son-in-law told him, “I know you are going to fix the car but if you started today you would not live long enough to finish it.” Fifteen months later, after a total restoration, he has his “brand new” TR-3. “I’m somewhat poorer but happy. I drive now only on dry sunny days and wish I was 20 years younger,” reported Forrest.

As sometimes happens there are issues with photos and cutlines that have appeared in past issues. Last week’s Throwback photo was totally wrong. Joyce Wills sent the correct information for this photo that initially appeared in the August 9, 1989 edition of the Galena Gazette. The team is Buck’s Bandits.
