Taking advantage of an early release day from school because of heavy snow on Friday, Jan. 20, Ricardo Cuellar-Huehne shoveled the fluffy snow off the sidewalks on Main Street in Galena. School students had an extended weekend with classes and activities canceled Monday because of freezing rain that pushed through the area. Group will share findings Core Planning Group looks to the future with school facilities GALENA-"We just recently completed a comprehensive study and analysis of the existing facilities of the Galena School District," said David Eaton, chairman of the Core Planning Group (CPG) that has been studying the school facilities in Galena Unit School District 120, during the Community Development Fund of Galena meeting with legislators on Jan. 12. Eaton noted that as part of the study the group examined the current program of study offered in the school district with "an eye toward 21st century education." The board will hear a full report from the CPG's findings on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. in the Galena High School library. This report will wrap up a year of investigation into the district's facilities and how the facilities are used and could be used in the future. The CPG is asking the school board for direction from that point. Eaton said that this is more of a meeting to inform the board than a public hearing; however, the public is welcome to listen to the report. In the upcoming presentation to the school board on Jan. 31, Dr. Dale Greimann, Galena superintendent, said an overall report of the CPG's finding will be shared, including the findings of a recent state fire life safety study. "Just to get an idea of what is necessary to be done to put the facilities up to date, and we're talking about virtually everything considered . . . We have $9 million worth of deferred maintenance in our school facilities," Greimann shared at the CDFG meeting. "For all intents and purposes this means that you may not even notice the difference in what their buildings look like or how they really perform when $9 million is spent." The Vision 2020 Education Committee has divided into two groups, both of which are recognized and supported by the Galena School Board. The CPG is developing strategies for the school district facilities the buildings and the grounds. The School Improvement Group (SIG) formed late last fall and will focus on curriculum and educational programs in the schools. The SIG group involves a broad representation of the community and expects to have quarterly meetings. This committee is an ongoing part of the Galena School District while the CPG assumes that as soon as they make the recommendations to the school board, their job is nearing completion.
