Firefighters discuss options with city
GALENA-Galena Fire Chief Mike Simmons reported to the city council on Feb. 26 that after taking a good look at firm cost estimates based on engineering drawings for the proposed addition to the present Galena Fire Department building, the members of the all-volunteer Galena Fire Department have decided to "go back to square one and discuss what we really want in 20 to 30 years."

Simmons said they have discussed various plans and revisions of plans for an addition to the back of the present building (dated 1940, with one more recent addition) and finally concluded that an adequate addition would probably cost $1.6 to $1.9 million.

Recreation Park bathhouse repairs 'going good'
GALENA-Although the recent weather hasn't exactly been conducive of pleasurable fantasies of enjoying a cooling dip in Galena's swimming pool and water park, work on repairing the damage to the bathhouse from the Jan. 30 fire is "going good" according to Galena Facilities Manager Craig Albaugh.

Fortunately, thanks to the early discovery of the fire by Galena Public Works Department crew members Jason Bingham and Dave Frank, there was little structural damage but smoke and soot can and did create a real mess. All the insulation and ceiling tile in the building had to be removed and replaced, and cleaning and deodorizing the building was estimated at a week's work for a five- to seven-person crew of professional fire-damage cleanup workers.

The gazebo
GALENA-The city has a problem with fixing up the Grant Park gazebo: It's a small job and no contractors want to bother with it, particularly since the city normally requires bid bonds, performance bonds, and payment bonds on any contract over $10,000.

Galena Facilities Manager Craig Albaugh reported to the Galena City Council on Feb. 26 that he had sent out bid documents on the necessary patching and painting to eight contractors and not received any bids. He said that this has happened on several small jobs the city has sent out for bids recently. He added that the staff believes this happens because the contractors are busy and the bonds required are too cumbersome to obtain for small jobs.

Hotel/motel tax
GALENA-Galena will postpone collecting hotel/motel tax revenue until Dec. 1, under certain contingencies.

Before taking this action, the city was set to start collecting hotel/motel tax revenue generated within the Galena city limits on May 1, 2007.

However, the city had agreed to turn over to the county the H/M tax revenue collected from May 1 through Nov. 30, 2007, so the county could plan promotional activities for the entire season.

County reports hotel/motel tax for FY06
GALENA-Hotel/motel tax receipts for fiscal year 2006 (FY 06) of $1,177,948.10 for Jo Daviess County have just been reported by the county treasurer's office. This reflects a slight decrease of 1.95 percent, or $20,878.26, when compared to the fiscal year 2005 (FY 05) total of $1,201, 426.63.

The county's fiscal year runs from Dec. 1 through Nov. 30. The final monthly total for November 2006, the last month of the fiscal year, may increase slightly as payments are received from delinquent properties or properties that, as allowed by statute, pay on an annual basis.
