East Dubuque claims victory in 26-20 football thriller over Galena Friday night
In one of the most exciting football games played at Galena High School in many years, East Dubuque came away with a 26-20 victory Friday night.
The Pirates scored the first two touchdowns in the first quarter, but the Warriors came roaring back with 26 unanswered points.
Time after time, East Dubuque went to its counter play and running back Jared Puls to bust open numerous big running plays. Puls rushed for 166 yards on the evening, 54 of them coming on a 54-yard third-quarter touchdown run.
The Pirates Trevor Harris scored twice for the Pirates while Tyler DuPlessis scored on a 60-yard run on a fumble recover.
After Galena went up 14-0, East Dubuque's Andrew Belken scored on an 80-yard kickoff return. He also scored on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Cole Thiell.
In other area games, Stockton beat AFC 34-26; Platteville won 53-12 over Southwestern; Benton/Scales Mound lost to Freeport Aquin 25-6; and Warren beat South Beloit 8-6.

Winning Wildcats
"We are one."
That was the slogan branded on the shirt of every coach, and each of the 200-plus fans who came to watch the River Ridge Wildcats step onto the football field for the first time as a stand-alone team on Aug. 27. The same slogan the team used in warm-ups. The same slogan they broke their huddles with. The same slogan the fans cheered, hundreds of voices in unison, as their team secured their first ever victory against the Durand Bulldogs.
