Southwestern graduates turn their tassels as they prepare to throw their caps in the air during the Southwestern High School graduation that was held on May 22 at the Southwestern Middle School gymnasium at noon. Southwestern had 40 students graduate in the class of 2022. Students heard speeches from valedictorian Alisa Ramaker and salutatorian Sabrina Splinter, along with a welcome address by class president Nathaniel Reiff.

Galena School District winners include Ashton Sproule , 17, senior; Gracie Dutlack, 15, sophomore; Emma Duncan, 15, freshman; Maddie Ehrler, 12, seventh grade; Noelle Ottenhausen, 11, fifth grade; and Jenna Nack, 11, fifth grade. The posters from these students will be entered into the state contest. The contest is designed to help young people learn the significance of the Memorial Poppy. Its purpose is to honor the memory of soldiers who died in World War I. The Galena American Legion Auxiliary members judged more than 50 posters.

GHS Graduation!
On Monday, Jan. 9, three East Dubuque High School seniors, from left, Madeline Heitkamp, Kaylee Nelson and Wil Quinn, participated in the annual Dorian Vocal Festival at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Nearly 1,000 students from across the Midwest participated in this choral singing festival, singing a variety of excellent repertoire, all while being fully immersed in the collegiate experience. The songs they performed were Shout Unto God by Heather Sorenson, Stars I Shall Find by Victor Johnson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water arranged by Kirby Shaw. The sopranos and altos sang a piece, Listen by Reena Esmail, and the tenors and basses sang a piece, Imaliyam, arranged by Lhente-Mari Pitout. Quinn also participated in a lesson with a member of the Luther College voice faculty.
