On Wednesday, April 26, Kenji Grahame and Ryne Laity of Stateline Solar of Lena visited Scales Mound School with their solar trailer. All students in grades six through twelve learned how electricity is produced through solar panels and the variety of job opportunities available in the growing solar industry.

On Sunday, March 26, eleven students from Southwestern High School were inducted into the National Honor Society during an evening ceremony. The five-member NHS Faculty Council, with input from the entire staff, selected students for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Current members conducted the ceremony, with concluding words from Mr. Tom Koeller, NHS advisor, and Mrs. Cynthia Lacey, high school principal. A reception followed allowing students, their families, staff, and community members to socialize while enjoying punch and cookies. Southwestern High School first began an NHS Chapter in 1970; since then, 586 students have been inducted into the Society. Above: current and newly-inducted NHS members. Southwestern students inducted into NHS
On Monday, May 8, the First Community Bank held a luncheon for the Galena Middle School seventh-grade math class. Each year First Community Bank donates checks, deposit slips and registers to all of the seventh grade math students in Mrs. Sarah Nack’s math class. The students learn real world math during the school year such as paying bills and balancing a checkbook as part of their curriculum. At the end of the year, the bank treats the top money makers to a luncheon at the bank. JDC Pheasants Forever donates to Bass and Trap teams
On Friday, April 28 the River Ridge FFA Chapter hosted its annual Ag Day for the elementary students at River Ridge High School. Students in pre-k through fifth grade were invited to attend the event which promotes and educates the students about different areas of the agriculture industry. There were five different student-led stations this year. FFA members gave short presentations on topics such as horses, beekeeping, fishing and apple production at one of the stations. Other stations included soil education and planting a flower, relay races, hoppy horse races, ice cream and a petting zoo. Citizens State Bank sponsored the event by providing cow headbands to every student in addition to helping work at the stations throughout the day. Both the high school FFA members and the elementary students had a fantastic day! Here, Ty Spahn and Lucas Holland give a presentation on fishing to the elementary school students.
