Sophia Loso is the artist of the month at Galena High School. She was nominated by her teacher Irene Thraen-Borowsky and chosen by a panel of three judges. This untitled piece is of a friend who participates in a K-pop group in which she’s involved. Loso, the daughter of Tom and Erin Loso, says art brings satisfaction and comfort to her and enjoys the experience of having people talk to her about her art. Although it’s sometimes challenging to getting the inspiration to start a project, but once she starts, she keeps working at it until finished. “I get a lot of satisfaction,” she says. She claims to be a perfectionist and admits that she always feels she could do better. She strives to learn and studies anatomy and other artists’ work as part of the learning process. I’m super happy that I was chosen. Candidates for the honor are nominated for demonstrating advanced creativity, high level of interest in art, commitment to skill advancement and creativity and problem solving. Thraen-Borowsky noted, “Since the moment I met Sophia, I was impressed by her talent and creativity. Some students come along and you just know they will always be artists. Sophia’s maturity both in process and in skill inspire me. I always look forward to seeing what she will make next and feel very honored to witness her creativity in action.” Sophomore Gracie DuHack and senior Ashton Miller were also nominated.

Stockton FFA members Charlie Breed and Alexi Haas won the state agriscience fair earlier this month. The two students competed in the food science division with their project that explored the effectiveness of different cleaning products on kitchen surfaces. The students worked for several months to conduct research and create their report. They submitted their report for the state agriscience fair and completed an interview over Zoom. They will be recognized on stage at this year’s state FFA convention in June for their state championship. Currently, Breed and Haas are working to prepare their report for the national contest that will take place this summer.
