“This hapless Leghorn, rushing like crazy to get out of the cold and back into the henhouse, on the Kienzle and Bader farm near Galena, didn’t quite make it and literally froze solid on the run. The dead bird, with wings spread and legs in long stride, was found last Thursday morning near the henhouse by Raymond Kienzle, who’s holding the hen, said he figures it froze in flight the day before when the mercury dived to 26 below at 7 a.m. and didn’t get above 15 below. Added to the 25 mile hour winds, it made Kienzle say, ‘It was the worst day I have ever experienced.’ His partner, Earl Bader, came across the frozen-in-flight Leghorn.”
