We are meant to be kind

As children of the military, we joined other children on the base for the Christmas celebrations. My father was often the hospital commander. We were Jewish kids at Christmas. We felt at home with the trees, Santa and presents. We figured those celebrations were simply American. What did we know then of the separation of church and state?
