EAST DUBUQUE–In recent years, East Dubuque Fire Department has used its fire cadets program to teach life lessons to youth of the community and inspire some to become firefighters and first responders. The fire cadet program started initially as part of the local Boy Scout Troop’s Explore program in 2000. They formed a good partnership and worked together for five years. The current fire cadet program was formed in 2015. Fire Chief Joe Heim researched the National Volunteer Fire Council’s junior fire programs and also got ahold of other departments and how they organize similar programs to get a plan in place. “We decided that we were going to try it again,” said Heim. East Dubuque’s Fire Cadet program is open to sixth through 12th graders. The program is primarily utilized by East Dubuque students, but according to Heim, the program is open to anyone interested. “We will take whoever, it doesn’t matter to us as long as they want to participate,” said Heim. “If they go and decide to join their local department or decide to join after college, then that is great. It gives them the ability and opportunity to be successful.” Heim said he has had some past members of the explore program and cadets join and others who have gone off to college that have shown interest in joining. “If we get some, we do, if we don’t then we don’t,” said Heim. “At least they have a good idea of what it takes and what they want to do. We usually add one additional participant each year.” According to Heim, the program started out with four cadets and additional members have been added each year. “This year’s schedule is based off of the schools,” said Heim. “If the schools have to go remote for a time period, while they are remote then we won’t have it. We have to stay in their guidelines.” The fire cadets meet monthly on a Saturday morning and the topics rotate between EMS information and fire information. “We decided to do one Saturday a month, starting in October so that we are away from fall sports and dragon boat racing,” said Heim. “We then go through May.” The training takes place from 9-11 a.m. with fire department crew and EMTs working with students. “Right now, the majority are kids of firefighters and EMTs, but we have had years when there are more kids that weren’t,” said Heim. “It is a great program and at least gives them the idea of whether or not they want to do it when they get older.” The January training was taught by Manny Alvarado and Molly Schulting and focused on bandaging and splinting injuries. Students took the time in learning to wrap arms and prevent bleeding and other beneficial information for the students. “In the end, it gives them skills that they can use throughout life that no one can take away from them,” said Heim. “Last month, they did CPR and AED things. This month we are doing bandaging and splinting. It is all stuff that if something happens, they will have the ability to do it or help out.” The cadets have a family day at the last training in May. Families are invited to the department and the students showcase what they learned. It is through programs such as this that the next generation of first responders begins. The East Dubuque Fire Department started the cadets program to help the next generation learn the skills they need.
