Pi Chapter of DKG went to “Valley of Eden Bird Sanctuary” for their September program. The sanctuary is a 409-acre property near Stockton. The sanctuary property was a gift from Nancy Hamill Winter to sustain Illinois native birds giving people who enjoy this preserve a better understanding about bird conservation. It is also a tribute to the Eden families that have farmed it for four generations. The familes continue the agricultural activity of grazing their black angus cattle in one of the pastures. It is one of eight public preserves owned by the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation. JDCF is a non-profit land conservatory that works in and around the county to preserve this part of the Midwest. Among the many species found on the property are Henslow’s sparrow, dickcissel, sedge wren and bobolink. The visiting DKG group learned that the grassland habitat provides the right cover and food mix to allow these species to breed and successfully rear a family. The bird sanctuary has been recognized by National Audubon for providing a critical breeding habitat for grassland bird species in Greatest Need of Conservation. Ben Steffes, Hillary Holt and Mary Stayner gave the group information on the property and touched upon the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation Properties that are available to the public and the importance of keeping nature preserved for generations to come. Some of the activities the sanctuary provides for the public include over six miles of trails to explore, school field trips and educational camps. Everyone in the group was given a JDCF tote bag that contained Stayner’s book, “Chasin the Bluebird”, and other items. The group then went to the home of Edith Dwinnells in Woodbine for its meeting, conversation and potluck dinner. Celebrating Homecoming in Galena: Galena students celebrated Homecoming by participating in a variety of events including Skit Night, the parade, tailgate, football game and dance.

The Duck Derby, held at 3 p.m. on Oct. 8 in the Galena River, had a winning prize of $1,000. Additional winners had a chance to win a Midwest Staycation, or a gift card bundle. All proceeds go to providing free and confidential services to survivors of sexual and domestic violence.
