The snow guns were put to work last week as crews at Chestnut Mountain Resort prepared for opening day. The resort will open this year with COVID-19 restrictions in place and frequent cleaning and sanitation efforts underway. There will be overall occupancy limitations in all buildings as well as on chair lifts. Face coverings and social distancing will be required in all indoor areas, base areas, lift lines and on chair lifts. There will be limitations on snow sport lessons offered. All restaurant, bar and cafeteria seating areas are closed and will remain closed until restrictions are lifted, but grab and go options will be available.

This Gazette throwback appeared in the Dec. 24, 1986 edition. “Happy Joe’s Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor once again sponsored a Christmas party for the handicapped of Jo Daviess County. All the trainees at the Jo Daviess County Workshop, as well as workshop employees and other handicapped people in the county, were invited. Galena Happy Joe’s manager Paul Connor said that every year they close the restaurant for half a day to hold the party. He reported 25 large pizzas, 35 pitchers of soda pop and 100 servings of ice cream were consumed.
