Fletcher reads 1000 books before kindergarten

Galena School District winners include Ashton Sproule , 17, senior; Gracie Dutlack, 15, sophomore; Emma Duncan, 15, freshman; Maddie Ehrler, 12, seventh grade; Noelle Ottenhausen, 11, fifth grade; and Jenna Nack, 11, fifth grade. The posters from these students will be entered into the state contest. The contest is designed to help young people learn the significance of the Memorial Poppy. Its purpose is to honor the memory of soldiers who died in World War I. The Galena American Legion Auxiliary members judged more than 50 posters.
American Legion members select contest winners
On Sunday, May 7, the Galena High School class of 2023 graduated among their parents, friends and peers. After the ceremony, all 57 graduates threw up their caps to celebrate the last four years coming to a close and look forward to the experiences to come. Galena held its earlier-than-usual graduation ceremony to facilitate an earlier school closing date to facilitate the construction project at the middle school. In its June 7 edition, The Galena Gazette will feature a special graduation section honoring all of the area’s graduates as well as photos from graduations. Graduation dates for other area schools are River Ridge, May 12, 7 p.m.; Warren, May 19, 6:30 p.m.; Scales Mound, May 21, 1 p.m.; Southwestern, May 21, 1 p.m.; Stockton, May 21, 2 p.m.; East Dubuque, June 2, 7 p.m.

Southwestern prom court announced
Julia Pellegrino is the artist of the month at Galena High School. The junior is photographed with her ceramic fish and her tarot card of an anglerfish. Pellegrino said that her inspirations for both pieces are, “my hobbies and interests.” She likes to create art with a variety of mediums such as watercolors, acrylic paints, or clay. She adds, “I like making art that includes my interest of nature, or what else I am interested in at the time.” She thinks art is important because it gives people a needed creative outlet to express themselves.
GHS artist of the month: Julia Pellegrino
On Tuesday, March 28 the third graders in Mrs. Linda Schafer’s and Mrs. Deb Reese’s classes at River Ridge enjoyed their annual Fine Dining Field Trip. For several weeks, they learned about and practiced their best manners in Mrs. Kristy Leitzen’s guidance classes. Then their manners were put to the test when they dressed up and headed to Chestnut Mountain to enjoy a very “fancy” meal.
