Galena seniors celebrate prom
Members of the Galena High School junior class were treated to a special Junior Sunset event outdoors at the high school on Saturday, May 7. Although rain ruined the sunset, students still had fun eating, playing games and hanging out. Thanks to generous donations from local businesses and individuals, those who attended received blankets, T-shirts and raffle prizes. Galena High School juniors celebrate end of school year
On April 27, East Dubuque High School held its National Honor Society induction, welcoming the newest members of the prestigious organization. Southwestern homecoming
Jo-Carroll Energy CEO Mike Casper presented the CTE Academy Little Learners Academy two checks totaling $5,000 on Monday, May 10. Accepting the check was Stacy Kloss, early childhood development instructor. The checks are from the Jo-Carroll Energy Sharing Success Grant and matching funds from the CoBank Sharing Success Grant. The $5,000 will be applied to the purchase and installation of the LLA perimeter playground fence. EAST DUBUQUE– Due to the uncertainty COVID brought to the play season, East Dubuque’s drama club members decided to write their own show. This allowed the cast to craft something that worked well for social distancing and allowed them to share it via social media and the school’s website. Director Melissa Kenkel and assistant director Micayla Willis were the head writers with a group of students who contributed to the creative process. The idea was to create a fictional radio station in an alternative reality of East Dubuque where ghosts are a daily part of life. The show itself is one episode of the recurring show on that fictional radio station which is hosted by two seniors, Liz Heim and Ayden Miller. The writing process gave students a chance to explore some of East Dubuque/Dunleith history. As part of the show, reporters, played by Lucy Roventine and Reed Adams, interview some real life historical figures including Captain Merry, played by Liam Thumser, who operated one of the first ferry boats in Dunleith; Diadamia Frentress, played by Sadie Riniker, one of the first white settlers in the area; and Al Capone, played by Easton Schemmel, the infamous gangster with connections to the tri-state area. The writers were also able to incorporate some interesting local stories and legends. In addition, the fictional radio station is haunted by a poltergeist, so the cast and crew played around with special effects, which made for a fun challenge. The cast wrapped up recording last week and then student video editor, Jeremiah Haven, compiled all of the clips into one movie and added some additional special effects. The drama club will host a movie premier of “Late Nights & Eternal Days” for the cast, crew and parents on Sunday, May 16 at East Dubuque High School. The movie will then be released to the public via the school’s website and shared on the Drama Club’s Facebook page, EDub Drama Club.
