With a 4-0 record, the Galena High School junior varsity scholastic bowl team amassed the highest point total from among 16 teams to be declared the winner of the Pecatonica JV Tournament held at Pecatonica High School on Jan. 18. The Pirates beat Byron, Oregon, Polo and Amboy. Liliana Asta was Galena’s high tossup scorer with 15; also contributing were Lex Abt and Macklan Murphy, with 11 each, and Ginger Cox with 1. Rounding out the team were Evon Main, Luna Pham and Layla Schemehorn. Asta, Abt and Murphy took turns in the role of captain. According to JV coach Ben Jenkins, “It was good to have the team at its full strength for the first time this season,” alluding to the fact that some JV players had been moved up to varsity during previous meets when varsity and JVs played at the same time. “We had great communication on the bonuses, and everyone contributed to the victory.” The next home meet is at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25 versus Warren. The varsity will compete in the library, and the JV will be in room 202. Spectators are welcome; admission is free.
