Galena School Board takes steps to move forward after Superintendent Greg Herbst's resignation

GALENA–Still reeling from the sudden resignation of Superintendent Greg Herbst, the Galena School Board took steps last week to shore up the district and focus on the future. Herbst’s last day with the district was Monday, Nov. 11.

The Galena School Board, meeting Tuesday, Nov. 5, formally accepted Herbst’s resignation. As the board considered that agenda item, school board member John Rosenthal suggested that there are district leaders who owe the teaching staff an apology for the way in which blame for Herbst’s resignation was largely focused on the faculty. Later at that same meeting, the board unanimously hired two individuals to assume the interim superintendent role. Retired superintendents Steve Bianchetta and Craig Mathers will lead the district for the remainder of the school year, each working approximately two days each week. During a special meeting that same evening, the board began the search process for a new superintendent.
