Several hundred spectators lined the top Chestnut Mountain’s Resort’s slope side viewing area and the Sunset Patio Sunday, March 19 despite bitter cold 20-degree temperatures. Over 20 skiers and snowboarders attempted to cross ponds filled with icy waters. New this year was a Mini slush pond (18”deep and significantly shorter than the large pond) for a younger set of competitors.

For the second year in a row, the Scales Mound Hornets boys basketball team headed to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to compete in the final four. On Thursday, March 9 the Hornets defeated the Tuscola Warriors 40-27 in the state semifinal game. With the win, the Hornets moved on to the state title game for the first time in the school’s history. On Saturday, March 11 the Hornets fell short to the Gibault Hawks 65-45 in the state championship game. Above: The Hornets’ bench cheered on their teammates during the championship. The St. Joseph Eagles’ boys and girls eighth grade boys and eighth-grade girls won their respective tournaments at Edgewood College, Madison, Wis., Feb. 18. It is believed that this is the first year in the school’s history that both the boys and the girls are champions, according to Stephanie Tranel, school principal. Chestnut Mountain Resort hosted its annual Big Nut ski and snowboard jumping and rail jam competitions, Saturday, March 4 on the slope side of the resort. Skiers and boarders attempted a wide variety of flips, twists and rotations as they launched off a massive jump constructed on the steep Geronimo run. Participants were judged on technical difficulty, complexity of the attempt and whether they landed without crashing. Over 30 competitors in a variety of age groups attempted riding a number of pipe rails and boxes during the rail jam competition launching from jumps located in Chestnut’s rail garden at the top of the Old Main Trail. New this year, the Big Nut mini-air jump, located on the bunny slope, attracted a large number of spectators as the youngest set of skiers and boarders (ages 3-12) took to the air doing a variety of twists and spins. “As a result of its success, the mini-air competition will become a regular event in the yearly Big Nut at Chestnut,” stated Caleb Flack, one of the event coordinators.
