Galena Cellars and Vineyard hosted their second annual Paella Party Saturday, Aug. 26 at their vineyard location. Attendees feasted on Chef Fernando Escalante’s paella, a seafood and rice dish, and assortment of recently released Galena Cellars wine. Originally from the Valencian Community in Spain, paella is one of the best-known dishes in Spanish cuisine. The dish takes its name from the wide, shallow traditional pan used to cook the dish on an open fire, paella being the word for a frying pan in Valencian/Catalan language. According to Chef Fernando, he used over 50 pounds of seafood including mahi-mahi, shrimp, squid, octopus, scallops and mussels, 30 pounds of rice and saffron seasoning. Jennifer Moore of Sheffield awaits her serving of the unique Spanish dish. Jennifer and her husband Matthew stated, “we’ve been coming to Galena for 20 years and really enjoy the events at the Vineyard.” Next year’s paella party will be held on the last Saturday in August at the Vineyard.

The Galena Center for the Arts will hold a table reading of the 2010 Tony Award winner for Best Play, Red, on Thursday, August 24, at 7 p.m. Written by John Logan, Red is a moving and compelling account of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, Mark Rothko. The action unfolds over the course of two years as Rothko and his young helper work on the famed murals that were to have hung at the Four Seasons restaurant in New York. This performance features Ron Jenkins as Rothko, and Ben Jenkins as his assistant, Ken. Narrated by Tracy Jenkins. Tickets are a suggested donation of $5 for students, $10 for adults. Three early settlers visit Prairie Ridge! Three women of Galena’s Courage and Commitment will visit Prairie Ridge, Sunday, August 27, at 2 p.m. These visitors will include Elizabeth Soulard, one of the earliest settlers to the Fever River settlement. She and her husband first saw the area on their way from St. Louis to search for the head waters of the Mississippi River. Sarah Coates Harris, wife of Daniel Smith Harris, the famous riverboat captain, will be another visitor. She was also one of the first licensed female doctors in the state of Illinois. Finally, Mary Miller, a colorful character noted for her drinking and partying will be stopping by. Come and hear their stories. There are a limited number of tickets, which are $10.
