Galena General Kirk Foecking shows off a pie at last year’s old fashioned pie auction during the President U.S. Grant Birthday Celebration. This year’s event is set for this Saturday, April 22, with the pie auction to be held at 11 a.m. at 403 S. Main St. Other weekend events include a lamplight tour of the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site at 5 p.m., Friday, April 21; Scott Whitney’s program on President Grant at 1:30 p.m., April 22 at Grant Park followed by Mark Leonard’s program on Gen. Buford at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Galena United Methodist Church hosts a circuit rider service at 10:30 a.m., with Gen. and Mrs. Grant attending, along with other military dignitaries. Weekend admission to the museum will be free on Saturday and Sunday.

Other LitFest events involved hearing the stories of other independently published authors, like P.J. HarteNaus. During HarteNaus’s event on Feb. 17, she spoke about her trials trying to get her first book published. She dealt with rejections from traditional publishers after going through the effort of writing query letters and submitting the manuscript. After that, she got trapped by vanity printers charging her $8,000 to publish her book and barely communicating with her after they had her money. HarteNaus eventually published her third book independently. She has published several books now under Wistleslick Press, the publishing company she created, with help from her daughter, Kelly Scrima. They both assist other authors trying to self-publish their books.
